Regionalisation of the Final Energy Consumption of the Sector Private Households in Europe

The final energy consumption of private households in 2017 amount 27 % of the final energy consumption in the 27 EU member countries, Norway, Switzerland, and United Kingdom. The consumption per energy carrier is splitted into following categories of applications: space heating, water heating, cooling and process cooling as well as cooking and other end uses like lighting. The regional distribution to NUTS-3-level relies on a specific approach depending on the application. On one hand the main distribution criteria for cooling applications, cooking and other appliances depend on the population per NUTS-3-region /EC-01 18/. On the other, the approach for space heating and hot water is based on the heating structure and the population. Furthermore, a weighting of heating degree days has been considered for space heating like in the sector services.

The heating structure represents the share of each energy carrier used for heating within any NUTS-3-region. It is assumed that hot water is provided by the same energy source as space heating. The heating structure is based on a variety of national statistics, which are described in detail in the paper /FFE-103 19/. The result of the combination of the population and the heating structure is a population weighted heating structure (PWHS). The PWHS represents the share among all NUTS-3-regions. The sum of all shares of NUTS-3-regions equals one per energy carrier.

Furthermore, the space heating depends on the temperature. However, the data has to be processed further, due to the inertia of the building mass. The degree-day numbers (DDN) are computed as described in VDI 3807 with small adjustments and the daily equivalence temperature (DAT) is used for the base for the temperature inertia of the building. Adding up DDN of one-year results in the yearly degree-day number (YDDN), which is then calculated for each NUTS-3-regions and NUTS-0-level. Further important parameters, besides the indoor temperature, for the YDDN computation involve the indoor temperature and heating threshold temperature. These parameters are set to 20°C and 15°C according for all countries, as there is a lack of country specific data. Hence, the PWHS is weighted by the YDDN.

Finally the absolute amount of the final energy consumption in 2017 per energy carrier and application is available per NUTS-3-region. In the map the relative values per square kilometer of all energy carriers and applications are presented and the absolute values by using the mouse over.
